Rimonabant (Acomplia)
What is Rimonabant
Rimonabant
is a new anti-obesity drug developed by Sanofi-Aventis,
a large pharmaceutical company.
If you are overweight this drug may help you lose weight
and maintaine your weight. It also helps those who smoke
as Rimonabant may control the urge to smoke and can help
quit smoking. Smokers usually do not stop smoking for fear
of weight-gain and it can be highly discouraging. However
since Rimonabant works on the overeating and
smoking factors simultaneously such problems can be avoided
using this drug. Resecnt clinical trials have shown that
heavy smokers, after being on a regular supplement of Rimonabant,
have stopped smoking.
Rimonabant may also reduce the level of fats
in the blood.
A team of researchers of Sanofi-Aventis, the company that
has developed rimonabant, reported on latest development
in July 2007 in the official journal of the American Association
for the Study of Liver Diseases, about benefits of rimonabant
in liver disorders. They said that observing function of
the drug in obese rats, rimonabant reduced markers of liver
damage, decreased levels of pro-inflammatory proteins, and
improved lipid profiles. They also reported the results
showed treatment with rimonabant reduced liver enlargement,
completely abolished hepatic steatosis, and decreased blood
levels of enzyme markers that indicate liver damage.
